The Last Legion is a 2006 action/adventure film directed by Doug Lefler from a screenplay written by Tom and Jez Butterworth, which was adapted from a story by Carlo Carlei, Peter Rader, and Valerio Manfredi. The film stars Colin Firth, Ben Kingsley, Aishwarya Rai, Peter Mullan, Thomas Sangster, Kevin McKidd, and Rupert Friend. The Last Legion will hit theaters on August 24, 2007.
The Roman empire is under threat and crumbling. Young Romulus Augustus, with his band of warriors in tow, embarks on a journey to Britain to hunt down a legion of supporters.
This is only the second film that Doug Lefler has directed, after Dragonheart: A New Beginning, the sequel to the 1996 film Dragonheart. Lefler has directed several television shows, including episodes of JAG, Spy Game, Babylon 5, Mortal Kombat: Conquest, and Xena: Warrior Princess. Lefler has also acted as second unit director on a number of Sam Raimi films, including Army of Darkness and Spider-man.
Tom and Jez Butterworth are screenwriter brothers who have written The Last Legion, Birthday Girl, Mojo, and Christmas.
Colin Firth is an accomplished English actor who has been in several films, including Bridget Jones’s Diary, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Nanny McPhee, Love Actually, Girl with a Pearl Earring, Shakespeare in Love, and many, many more. Including The Last Legion, he has a total of nine movie credits for 2007.
Aishwarya Rai is an Indian actress who has starred in several Indian films. She has several American films on her plate, including Journey Across India, Chaos, The Rebel, and Singularity. She has won over a dozen awards for her acting.
Sir Ben Kingsley is a veteran actor who has been in dozens and dozens of feature films. Some of his most notable roles were in movies such as Gandhi, Schindler’s List, Sexy Beast, and House of Sand and Fog.
