Stardust is a 2007 film that is loosely based on Neil Gaiman’s 1998 fantasy novel of the same name. The film will be directed by Matthew Vaugh from a screenplay by himself and Jane Goldman. The large cast of the film includes Charlie Cox, Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert DeNiro, Ricky Gervais, Sienna Miller, Henry Cavill, Peter O’Toole, Sarah Alexander, Jason Flemying, and Rupert Everett. The film will be narrated by Sir Ian McKellen.

The films follows a young man named Tristran who, after witnessing a falling star crash down, sets out to retrieve it for the lady he loves, Victoria, in order to win her heart. To do so, he ventures outside of his village walls into a forbidden land. Soon after, he learns that the star has transformed into a beautiful young woman named Yvaine, and he’s not the only one after her. He’ll have to fight four heirs to a throne, the ghosts of three dead brothers, an evil witch, and a gay cross-dressing pirate, all hell-bent on capturing Yvaine.

Charlie Cox, who plays Tristran, is a young English actor who has appeared in such films as Things to Do Before You’re 30, The Merchant of Venice, and Casanova. Claire Danes, who plays the mysterious Yvaine, has been in several movies, including Igby Goes Down, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and Shopgirl, opposite Steve Martin. Sienna Miller, who plays Victoria, is a New York-born actress who co-starred with Cox in Casanova and starred in director Matthew Vaughn’s crime thriller Layer Cake.

Speaking of Matthew Vaugh, Stardust is only his second directorial effort after the aforementioned Layer Cake, which starred a pre-Bond Daniel Craig. His work on the screenplay for Stardust is also his first screenwriter credit.

Stardust opens in North American theaters on August 10, 2007, courtesy of Paramount Pictures.

This is a great book by an awesome author. Check out his Sandman series, it was a revolutionary comic.
