Fido – Family Fun With Zombies

Fido is a 2006 Canadian horror/comedy film that was directed by Andrew Currie from a screenplay by himself, Robert Chomiak, and Dennis Heaton. It was produced by Lions Gate Films and will be released in the US on June 15, 2007.

Fido is set in a 1950’s-era alternate universe where the dead have returned to life. At first it seemed like the human race was doomed for sure, as chaos ruled the Earth. Fortunately, some scientists at a company called ZomCon created specials collars that calmed the zombies down and made them easier to live with. Now they’re used as pets/butlers and do everyday tasks, such as delivering milk and carrying the mail. The film centers around one zombie, Fido, and his family. The family’s son, Timmy Robinson, strikes up a strange bond with Fido. However, when Fido’s collar malfunctions and the family’s neighbors start dying, all Hell breaks loose.

Andrew Currie also wrote and directed the 1997 short film Night of the Living, which was about a young boy dealing with his father turning into a zombie. So Currie seems to have experience with the undead.

The film stars Dylan Baker, Carrie-Anne Moss, Henry Czerny, Tim Blake Nelson, K’Sun Ray, and Billy Connolly as Fido.

Peter Stormare, who played Gaear Grimsrud in the Coen Brother’s critically acclaimed Fargo and John Abruzzi in Prison Break was originally attached to play Fido, but he was cast in Prison Break shortly before filming began, so he dropped out.

Carrie-Anne Moss is best known for her role as Trinity, Keanu Reeve’s Neo’s love interest, in The Matrix trilogy. She recently starred in Disturbia, opposite Shia Lebeouf.

Dylan Baker has been in several films and can be seen in the upcoming Spider-Man 3 as Dr. Curt Connors. He is also currently on the FOX television show Drive.

Fido currently has a 94% at Rotten Tomatoes, out of 16 reviews total.
