1408 – John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, and Stephen King

1408 is a 2007 horror film based on a short story by acclaimed author Stephen King. The film is directed by Mikael Hafstrom, from a screenplay by Scott Alexander, Matt Greenberg, and Larry Karaszewski. John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson star.

1408 is originally from the audiobook Blood and Smoke, which was released in 1999. It was later published in 2002 in the short story collection Everything’s Eventual.

The film follows Mike Enslin (John Cusack), a celebrity author of the paranormal. After the death of his young daughter, Mike’s world becomes unraveled and he dedicates himself to disproving all of the supernatural myths that he built his career on. He eventually learns of the Dolphin Hotel in New York City and its supposedly haunted room 1408. Enslin reserves the room, and despite numerous warnings from hotel manager Mr. Olin (Samuel L. Jackson), investigates the room for himself, where he discovers that it’s not just a scary story after all.

Stephen King fans rejoice! Although King might be the undisputed “King” of horror authors, all of the television and film adaptations based off of his works rarely do justice to their source material. 1408 looks to break that curse, with its stellar production values and fantastic cast. I believe that John Cusack is one of the finest actors working today, and you can never go wrong with Samuel L. Jackson.

Mikael Hafstrom has directed a number of foreign films, but his most recent movie was Derailed, a thriller starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszweski are a screenwriting duo who are responsible for several bio-pics, including The People Vs. Larry Flynt, Man on the Moon, and Ed Wood. Matt Greenberg is the writer behind Halloween H20 and Reign of Fire.

1408 looks to be a good adaptation of a King story and a genuinely scary movie. Check out the trailer below.
